DESTINATION INSTALLATION,Johannesburg,1999.
Visitors arrive in an old sandstone theatre in the middle of Pretoria, which is now used as a car parking lot, they are led to the beautiful old stage and to the back staircase that goes down into the orchestra pit and what used to be prop storage space. They find hundreds of computer monitors in rows, all facing the same direction, all dead, unplugged. It is very dark. The floor is flooded. There is only one LED on, and it is connected to a malfunctioning harddrive, jittering and jerking, positioned inside a glass box full of smoke in the middle of the room. There is one random computer with black screen and green text spitting out in random rhythm the words of the soundtrack which comes from three directions from three different sources. Different syntheized voices speak the text together with flushing toilet sounds.
Sadly I have no images or recordings left from the event except some of the audio clips that were used to make the soundtrack and changed to become part of a second mobile version of the piece.
